About the Berkeley Store
What started with Robert (“Bob”) Gerner peddling granola in 1970 has become a Berkeley institution. Our Gilman street store is proud of the long history and steady community involvement we have with our neighbors in the Westbrae district and surrounding areas. The Berkeley Natural Grocery opened it’s doors on December 10, 1981 and has been a supporter of local, organic produce and products ever since. Our primary interests are in forging relationships with people who care deeply about the planet and the products they create in order to serve you, our neighbors, the best quality food. Locally owned by the employees you meet in the aisles of the store.
A selection of 100% organic produce means no cross contamination or worries about accidentally picking up a conventional apple, potato or lettuce. We take great care with each product we sell, making sure it is sourced from the best provenance with immpecible environmental standards and fair work practices. That is to say, we do the research for you so that you may feel good about the items you purchase in our stores. We look forward to your visit!
