Musician Bios:
Julio Bravo
Celebrating 15 years of fiery live concerts with his Orquesta Salsabor, Peruvian singer/songwriter/bandleader Julio Bravo continues to be one of San Francisco’s favorite salsa acts. Festive, exotic, and upbeat, this group’s buoyant beats have been engaging crowds and filling dance floors around the Bay Area for years. Sample a few seconds from their latest CD and you’ll hear what we mean. In 2004, Julio returned to Lima to record his first salsa CD, 10 Años de Salsa, which features 5 original compositions and the contributions of the talented trombonist Paul Lyons, an original member of Orquesta Salsabor.
Jose Soto
Music specialist José Soto, a classically trained musician who grew up playing the violin and learned the art of traditional mariachi music in Mexico. At 15, Soto and his family moved from Tapalpa, a little village about two hours south of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, to Sonoma County where his passion for music grew. He started a mariachi club at Elsie Allen High School and after graduating from Sonoma State University, he focused on passing his passion on to young musicians.
That passion came in the form of working with one of the biggest arts centers in Sonoma County.
The program Soto started seven years ago alongside Ashleigh Worley, who is the director of education and community engagement at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts. The Luther Burbank Center for the Arts is a Santa Rosa nonprofit arts and event center offering education, art and community programs, is still going strong.
David Pinto
David is a Peruvian native best-known for his work as music director, arranger, and bassist for Grammy-winner Susana Baca, Diva of Afro-Peruvian song. He was member of Peru Jazz, a group highly praised for their innovation and fusion of Peruvian roots and jazz.
He has performed at various international jazz and world music festivals, such as WOMAD in Nice, Paris, Glastonbury, and Montreal. He has toured internationally in theaters, including The Kennedy Center and The Hollywood Bowl, Theatre De La Ville (Paris), and Royal Festival Hall (London). David also leads and performs with his own group Syncopated Colors, as well as teaching at the Jazz School in Berkeley, California.
